LGBTQ Awareness Training

This positive training day offers a safe friendly space for participants to build their understanding about gender and sexuality and creates opportunities for people to build confidence and ideas around celebrating and supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people, families and team members in their setting.

Using a variety of activities we will explore

  • some of the language and concepts around sexual and gender identities.
  • where our ideas around sexual and gender identities come from
  • some of the experiences and additional vulnerabilities that LGBTQ young people may face
  • the developments and progress made in history, law & policy around gender and sexuality
  • some ways in which support can be provided to LGBTQ young people, family members, team members and visitors.
  • how to be an effective LGBTQ Ally
  • action planning building on existing good practice
  • services available for referral and support

Everyone is welcome to this session. If you have particular areas you would like to explore, or particular issues you would like us to discuss, please let us know a few weeks before the course and we will try and adapt the programme.

This training is provided through a partnership of VAL Training &  Barnardo’s Positive Identities team, who offer a variety of services and support to LGBTQ children, young people, families, schools and organisations across Yorkshire and Humber in addition to providing training, consultancy and support to organisations, institutions and groups across the UK.
