National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC)
Organisation Aims and Activities: Our office in Albion Street is the NSPCC’s central service delivery hub for our region and houses our Childline service, which offers many young people a lifeline when they need it. The service is run largely by volunteers who we recruit and train right here in our city to provide support and comfort to children here in Leeds and across the country who are struggling with their mental health, abuse, or neglect, and when they feel they have nowhere else to turn.
Child abuse figures for our city last year make for sobering reading:
• 1 in 10 children in Leeds received a sexual message online.
• 870 sexual offences against children were recorded by the police
• 568 children were subject of a Child Protection Plan.
• 1,346 children are in care here in our magnificent city of Leeds
We prevent abuse
We work with families when they’re going through difficult times, and we offer all kinds of support – from helping new parents care for their baby to giving professionals the tools they need to assess neglect.
We also visit local primary schools across Yorkshire with our Speak Out, Stay Safe programme, helping children to understand what abuse is and giving them the confidence to speak out and seek help if they ever need it. We deliver our service to 90% of primary schools in Leeds but there are 18 schools which are hard to reach and with your help we would like to increase that to as near as 100% as possible.
We protect children
We have an NSPCC national helpline that offers support and advice for adults. In the year to March 2021, the helpline was contacted almost 85,000 times, up 23% in the previous year – that’s someone ringing with a concern about a child every 10 minutes.
Every 25 seconds, a child contacts our Childline service
Our latest data shows that Childline delivered over 200,000 counselling sessions last year.
We transform children’s lives
If a law needs to change, or if more needs to be done to protect children, we demand it. The fact that we’re independent – means we can push for change when others can’t.
