Leeds Zen Group

Organisation Aims and Activities: We're a member of the International Zen Association UK (IZAUK) which is affiliated to the International Zen Association, founded by Master Taisen Deshimaru. Zen is not a philosophy or religion, but a practice and an attitude to life. The word Zen comes originally from the Sanskrit 'Dhyana', which can be translated as concentration, observation, meditation. Central to Zen is the practice of zazen - simply sitting, not grasping at the thoughts and emotions that arise within us, just allowing them to pass by. Through this, we become aware that many of our everyday preoccupations are not so important, and that clinging to them brings suffering to us and to others. The mission of IZAUK and its member groups is to facilitate and promote the practice of zazen and the teachings of the late Master Deshimaru by providing opportunities for the practice of zazen at weekly meditation sessions as well as at regular zazen days and retreats (sesshins).
